What is Botox®?
The active ingredient in Botox® is a purified protein
called Botulinum Toxin A. In nature, this is produced by the bacterium
Clostridium botulinum, which is particularly found in soil and aquatic
sediments.
HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK ?
When injected into a muscle, Botox® temporarily blocks the
neurochemical signals from the motor nerve endings which make the muscle
contract. In the face, the resultant muscle weakening relaxes wrinkles and
leads to a smoothening and rejuvenation of the skin.
What would BOTOX® treatment entail?
If you are interested, we can arrange for an initial
consultation. This will allow us to find out about your particular needs and
expectations. It also gives you the pportunity to ask any further questions and
have the options and treatment explained to you in greater detail. You will be
under no obligation o proceed, but if you do decide to go ahead, either during
the same consultation, or at a later appointment date, you will be asked a few
questions about your general health and required to sign a consent form. The
Botox® is then administered by injection to the predetermined areas with a very
fine needle (the same type used by diabetic patients to inject insulin). Most
people tolerate the injections very well, but if you wish, we can apply a local
anaesthetic cream beforehand. You may return to work and most activities
straight away, but we will ask you to abide by a few simple posttreatment
guidelines.
Is BOTOX® SAFE?
Botox® has an excellent safety record stretching back over
almost two decades. It has been used since 1989 to treat various medical
conditions, ranging from cerebral palsy to hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating),
both in children and in adults. Additionally, it is currently the most commonly
performed cosmetic procedure in the world, with several million injections
administered globally each year.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX® TAKE TO START WORKING?
The effects of Botox® are usually noticeable within two to
seven days. In some people, however, it can take as long as two weeks.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX® LAST ?
This depends on the individual and on the area treated. On
average, Botox® lasts for approximately three to four months. After several
injections, however, most people find that the effects persist for longer. Your
treatment will be carefully monitored, and the interval between injections
adjusted accordingly.
WHO CAN HAVE BOTOX®?
Botox® can be administered to both men and women of
practically any age group. It is best suited to treating fine wrinkles, or areas
where wrinkles are likely to form. The most commonly treated sites are the
glabella (the area between the eyebrows at the root of the nose), the forehead,
and around the eyes, but specific sites will be discussed with you at the time
of your consultation.
HOW MUCH DOE S I T COST ?
Traditionally, Botox® treatment is charged per injection
site. This means, for instance, that treatment of the entire forehead would cost
approximately three times as much as treatment of the area between the eyebrows
alone. At Avril Haffron however, we only charge a single amount of £350
regardless of how many areas are injected.
